Batting Cages Approved for J.B. "Red" Owens Recreation Complex

February 20, 2012 By: Admin Category: Recreation

Easley City Council voted to approve a resolution to move forward with the construction of new batting cages and bullpens at the JB Red Owens Recreation Complex on Monday.

#13;

After several years of planning, the council voted to award a contract for $312,000 to Phillips Brothers Construction to build new batting cages and bullpens before the start of the 2012 Big League World Series.

#13;

In January, the council moved to postpone a vote on the project so council members could review the plans for the project which will be paid for by using Hospitality Tax funds.

#13;

Councilman Brian Garrison said the project has been in the works for approximately 2-3 years.

#13;

This will make our park, if its not already one of the best in the state, I think it will make it the best, Garrison said.

#13;

The batting cages and bullpens will be available to the public when they are not in use by sports teams, city officials said.

Council members voted unanimously to approve the project with the exception of Councilwoman Kim Valentin who was not present for the vote.

NFL Should Drop Blackout Policy for Games Not Sold Out, Senators Tell FCC

February 20, 2012 By: Admin Category: Games

Five US senators called on the
National Football League to stop barring television broadcasts
of games that lack a sellout crowd, as the league told
regulators the practice benefits fans.

“It is time for the NFL’s blackout policy to end,” the
lawmakers said in a letter to the Federal Communications
Commission yesterday. The agency is considering voiding a rule
that prevents cable and satellite companies from showing
professional sports events when the local TV station is blacked
out by contract.

The senators signing the letter, all Democrats, were
Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Tom Harkin of Iowa, Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey and Sherrod Brown of Ohio, where 6 of 8 home games by the Cincinnati Bengals
were blacked out last season.

“These blackouts are ruining the experience of rooting for
the home team and are unjustly hurting fans,” the senators
said. “That many of these stadiums were constructed or
remodeled using taxpayer dollars underscores the disservice done
to fans by blackouts.”

The NFL told the FCC that “just 16 games last year out of
256 regular season games” were blacked out. The rule, which
dates to 1975, is aimed at ensuring that enough fans attend
games.

The blackout rule “enables fans to enjoy programming made
available by the NFL and its broadcast partners on free, over-
the-air television while also promoting the excitement of a live
game with full stadiums,” the NFL said in a filing.

Broadcasters’ Filing

In the 1974 season just before the rule went into place, 58
percent of games were blacked out to home audiences, and that
percentage has dropped to 6 percent in the most recent season,
the league said.

“These numbers show that the league’s decades-long
commitment to promoting each week of the NFL as an event that
attracts wide fan support is working, both for fans in the
stadium and fans watching on television,” the NFL said. “The
current system is working and should not be altered.”

The National Association of Broadcasters told the FCC the
rule prevents cable and satellite providers from circumventing
leagues’ contracts with broadcasters. Eliminating the rule would
“hurt local broadcasters and their viewers and could accelerate
the migration of popular sports programs from free to pay TV,”
the Washington-based trade group said in its filing. Members
include Comcast Corp. (CMCSA)’s NBC, News Corp. (NWSA)’s Fox, the Walt Disney
Co. (DIS)’s ABC and CBS Corp. (CBS)’s CBS.

The NFL in December signed contract extensions through the
2022 season with CBS, Fox and NBC.

Fan Group

The FCC is considering a petition filed in November by
groups including the Sports Fans Coalition, a Washington-based
nonprofit advocacy group. The organization has accepted funds
from Time Warner Cable Inc. (TWC) and Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ),
Brian Frederick, its executive director, said in an interview.

The Sports Fans Coalition in its filing yesterday said the
FCC should repeal the rule because it supports “blatantly anti-
fan, anti-consumer behavior by professional sports leagues.”

The filing was also signed by the Washington-based policy
groups Public Knowledge and Media Access Project; the National
Consumer League, which says it works for economic justice for
consumers; and the League of Fans, a sports-reform project
founded by consumer advocate Ralph Nader.

Neil Grace, an FCC spokesman, declined to comment. The
agency faces no deadline to act.

Mountain West, C-USA to form new conference

February 18, 2012 By: Admin Category: Uncategorized

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) – A new superconference consisting of the
remaining members of the Mountain West Conference and Conference-USA, plus
others, will be formed in time for the 2013-14 academic year.

The MWC and C-USA have both lost members in the ongoing conference shuffle,
leading to the coalition announced on Monday, one day after representatives of
16 universities discussed the issue in Dallas.

The schools present included: the United States Air Force Academy, University
of Alabama at Birmingham, Colorado State University, East Carolina University,
Fresno State, University of Hawaii, Marshall University, University of
Nevada, Reno, University of New Mexico, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Rice
University, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Texas at El
Paso, Tulane University, The University of Tulsa and University of Wyoming.

Hawaii will be a football-only member in the conference, which will consist of
18 to 24 schools and seek NCAA FBS affiliation.

This is an exciting development that will stabilize the current conferences
and create the first truly national conference with members in five time zones
and television viewership from coast to coast, said UNLV president and MWC
board of directors chairman. We are moving our plans forward rapidly and
expect to complete our conversations in the near future.

The schools are scheduled to work together for the next six months to finalize
the daunting merger.

The International Olympic Committee, which has monitored the building construction since Sochi was awarded the 2014 Olympics five years ago, said Tuesday that the multi-billion-dollar project is going according to plan.

“We are very satisfied,” IOC coordination commission chairman Jean-Claude Killy said after his latest inspection visit. “Two years are left, and these will be the most challenging two years. But we see no reason for concern.

NBA: Ben Wallace breaks record for games played by undrafted player

February 17, 2012 By: Admin Category: Games

While most of the basketball universe has their eyes turned to the undrafted Jeremy Lin, on the same night the Taiwanese-Americanled his squad to a sixth straight win, another undrafted player was making headlines of a more subtle and longer type.

Detroit Piston Ben Wallace broke the record for most games played by an undrafted player when he checked in during the first quarter of a 99-95 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time) at the Palace at Auburn Hills, the Pistons Twitter account (@detroitpistons) confirmed.

Wallaces 1,055 games broke the record, appropriately enough, of Avery Johnson, who retired from the NBA as a Spur and is now the New Jersey Nets head coach.

The 38-year-old undersized center is a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and a five-time NBA All-Defensive First Team member.

Wallace, originally signed by the Washington Bullets as a free agent, got traded to the Orlando Magic, before making his way to the Pistons in the trade for Grant Hill. As a Piston, Wallace was a part of the 2003-04 championship team that defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in five games.

A 16-year veteran, Wallace has career averages of 5.9 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2 blocks and 1.3 steals. He recently told the Detroit News that he plans to retire at the end of this season. JVP, GMA News

A-10 coaches think about adding 2 more league games

February 16, 2012 By: Admin Category: Games

The Atlantic Tens potential expansion to an 18-game league schedule was the hot topic in Mondays weekly coaches teleconference.

League officials are still talking about the benefits and the drawbacks of moving from 16 games to 18. The decision will be made in May.

La Salles John Giannini was one of many coaches against the move.

He said it would hurt the teams Rating Percentage Index (RPI), which is used to rank squads based on wins and losses and strength of schedule.

The biggest part of your RPI is your opponents records, Giannini said. Clearly, if we add more games against each other, we are going to have a .500 record in those games. If we play more nonconference games, our teams will have more wins, and it elevates the whole conference.

Parents upset over recreation fees for youth sports

February 16, 2012 By: Admin Category: Recreation

Some Paso Robles parents are fed up with the fees for youth sports programs in the city.

They say the recreation department used to provide money to youth sports teams but with budget cuts, more parents are now volunteering their time and putting in their own money to run the teams.

The city is now asking the youth sports leagues in town to pay for all the extra hours they use the sports fields. Its not sitting to well with parents who say their volunteering their time to save the city money.

The recreation department in Paso Robles says its top priority is saving field space for youth leagues, but parents say the city isnt doing enough to cover costs.

I feel like its not too much to ask for the city to cover the cost of mowing and maintaining the field that they would have to mow and maintain even if we werent on it, said Vickie Luna, whos son plays for the youth football league.

We do need to collect at least some amount of rent to just barely begin to cover the expense involved with maintaining these fields, said Library and Recreation Services Director Julie Dahlen.

She says the city charges the leagues two dollars per hour to use the fields as long as they dont go over 3600 hours per year. So far, that hasnt worked out.

Going back to 2009, they were already up to about 5,000 hours and they peaked in 2010 using 7,291 hours, Dahlen said.

And in these tough economic times, every dollar counts.

Its clear some of the fields could use a lot of work, but the recreation department says it doesnt have the money to do all that upkeep right now, partially due to budget cuts and it says the youth leagues in town arent paying their fair share.

They do need to become accustomed to paying for what they use, Dahlen said.

The city says it needs to give other groups a chance to use the fields as well, but some parents say the city should take a closer look at its books

I feel like they need to reallocate their budget and move money, Luna said.

While money remains the key issue, both sides say they just want youth sports to shine.

The city says it would need to charge $22-$25 an hour to actually recover all of its maintenance costs for the sports fields.

City officials feel there is a lot of misinformation circulating about how it charges the youth sports leagues. It welcomes anyone with questions or concerns to contact the recreation department at 237-3991.
